Word Generation Weekly

Mr. Buttimer lists target words plus bonus words and encourages students to pay attention to how they are used in the weekly passage. He also reminds students that the words will need to be included in their Friday essay assignment. He then reads the weekly passage.

Mr. Buttimer uses comprehension questions to generate discussion. He leads discussion to define wiretapping. He asks students to connect wiretapping to the issue of security. Students share attitudes about privacy, security, and governmental control. Mr. Buttimer delineates a basic trade-off: safety and privacy.

Mr. Buttimer reviews definitions using the chart on page 44 and relates the definitions to the weekly topic. He groups students as partners to do assignment. Word posters are to include: assigned word, definition, synonyms, illustration, various forms, sentence using the word. Students are given 20 minutes to complete assignment.

Students work in groups preparing posters. Students use a thesaurus for synonyms and dictionaries to find other forms of the word. Mr. Buttimer encourages "notwithstanding" group to use "despite" to help them compose a sentence. "Covert" group uses dictionary to check if "covertly" is a word. "Suspicious" group describes progress on their poster. "Wiretapping" group describes progress on their poster. "Wiretapping" group shares a few personal opinions on the weekly topic.

Mr. Buttimer reviews poster he has on the classroom wall about how to make a good presentation. "Suspicious" group presents poster to the class. Teacher asks presenters to use "suspicious" in a way related to the weekly topic and continues with other groups. Finally Mr. Buttimer reminds students that they will debate the topic in social studies class the next day.

Mr. Buttimer assigns the "Taking a Stand" open response portion of Word Generation unit and discusses other class assignments.

Student reflects on the topic of the week. Student shares an early draft of the assigned essay. Student also describes his plans for completing the essay.
