Mr. Estes and students talk about what the word "media" means, and he has students lists forms of media. He then sets the norms of the lesson debate and asks if the media rating system is effective and necessary. He lists four possible positions in the lesson debate. He then asks students to choose one of the positions to defend.

Mr. Estes divides students into groups based on the position they chose. One student from each group presents an argument for their position. Finally, Mr. Estes instructs students to write down the arguments from opposing groups.
